Artistic Gentrification
A hundred years ago Tel Aviv started rising “from the sands" and became the city for many bourgeois Jews who came to Israel from Europe. It also attracted young intellectuals and artists as it opened new horizons for modern, secular, more European like way of life as an alternative to the more traditional cultural life of Jerusalem. In time the city became a subject of a vivid body of Hebrew literature and visual arts creations, expressing the realization of the Zionist dream of modernization and secularization.
Today Tel Aviv is a big bustling metropolitan and is still a subject of rich artistic reference and inspiration. In this tour we will focus on the visual culture of TLV – how it looks and how it was described in different eras. In doing so, the tour also aims at shedding light on the gentrification processes of TLV, for better and worse, and follows the hidden gems of architecture, street art, photography and public art.

Art in the Capital: From traditional to experimental contemporary art in Jerusalem
Israel’s capital city is returning to be also a capital of contemporary art. New galleries, artists’ studios, artist run spaces, municipal venues and more – are scattered around the city.
In this tour we will explore the contemporary art scene in Jerusalem, focusing on the avant-garde collective art. We will visit places where art is made and exhibited and meet the people who make it all happen. We will try to understand if there is a place for art-community values in a capitalist and materialistic society, how the municipality reacts to these initiatives and how the traditional art world accepts them. All this in Jerusalem, which surprisingly performs as the perfect arena for collective art activity.
